My Blog

A Fresh New Look!

10/15/24

Last month, I decided to revamp my website to become more personalized and artist-centric. If any of you had visited the old website (paperbackpreferred), it was a mix of book and movie reviews, and my graphic design portfolio. The identity of the site felt like it was too divided and needed a unifying theme (and also a coat of new paint). That all culminated into jacobscomicz.com.

Feels a bit surreal to have a website proudly displaying all my art. In the old website, I didn’t include the cartoony illustrations I made for fun in my portfolio. I thought it needed to only look like professional graphic design work, but now I see I was holding back not only some of my best work but also the type of art I like to draw the most. A note to any artists out there reading this: don’t shy away from what you love to do.

But the reviews and updates haven’t gone away! That’s what this blog is for. In addition to art, I also love to write, so this is going to be an outlet for releasing recent thoughts or reflections of mine. So here’s some quick reviews:

  • Sing: I rewatched this Illumination movie and it’s still surprisingly enjoyable. It’s impressive how many characters the story juggles and it never feels overwhelming or disconnected from the main plot. The music is also amazing, and half the reason you watch these movies anyway.
  • Mistborn: I finished rereading the original trilogy of Mistborn over the summer and I absolutely loved it and cried so much at the end. I didn’t like these books when I first read them because I had expected them to be something different. But now that I’ve read the story for what it is, I adore its message on hope, faith, and trust.
  • Animal Crossing: I guess I’ve been revisiting a lot of things this year, because I’m currently replaying Animal Crossing: New Horizons! I actually made a presentation about the game recently for a Digital Cultures class and that’s what got me back into it. I love the gameplay and I actually love that the clock connects to the real world! There’s so much to do, but the daily renewal of limited resources means that there’s always a manageable number of tasks to do each day and gives a feeling of steady progression. There’s not really an “end” to the game anyway, so the pacing doesn’t feel too slow, and the music and environment make the overall experience very peaceful.

Updates:

  • I’ll probably keep tinkering around with the website to make stuff look better (and add more content as it gets made). I’ll update my Instagram story if I do add anything substantial that people might be interested in.
  • Flightless Follies returns this week! The series has been on hiatus for two months due to college starting back and a different project I’m working on that’s not ready to be fully revealed yet. These next few comics are a part of a story arc, so that’s exciting! I hope I can have Comic #6 out sometime this month, but if not, you can count on it coming in November.

I’m currently listening to some Mario Galaxy music while I write and it’s making me feel very muse-ful (if that’s a word, haha!). I listen to instrumental music a lot while I’m writing or drawing. It helps me focus and can put me in the mood of a piece.

That’s all for this post! Thanks for reading.
